Mars Logistics has taken another significant step in its journey to reduce its environmental impact and strengthen its corporate sustainability strategies by increasing the share of renewable sources in its energy consumption. The company has once again demonstrated its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint by increasing its certification volume by 2025 with the I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificate), which is globally recognized in the field of energy management.
Mete Şekli, Sustainability Leader at Mars Logistics, explained that the I-REC certificate, whose primary purpose is to ensure that electricity generated from renewable energy sources is traceable in the market, is a standard that verifies that the source of the electricity produced or consumed is renewable energy. He continued: “I-REC is not just a certificate; it is also a powerful tool that demonstrates companies’ commitment to the principle of environmental transparency. Certifying the energy we consume is of great importance in terms of reducing our Scope-2 emissions and making our operations more environmentally friendly. These steps we are taking toward a cleaner future form the cornerstones of our sustainability strategy.”
Şekli said, “In line with our sustainability goals, we have been obtaining I-REC certification at our Hadımköy Logistics Center since 2021. We aim to reduce our environmental impact and reflect our green logistics approach to all our stakeholders in a concrete way by increasing our annual certification process this year compared to the previous year.”
Stating that they are responding to the growing expectations for sustainability around the world with the I-REC certificate and that they aim to spread this approach throughout the supply chain, Şekli emphasized that their sustainability vision is not limited to energy certificates and continued as follows: “As Mars Logistics, we are making operational improvements at the Hadımköy Logistics Center, such as LED conversions, the use of high-efficiency lithium-ion rectifiers for electric work machines, and the preference for energy-efficient systems. Thanks to our efforts to separate waste at the source and direct it to recycling, we have obtained Zero Waste Certificates for our warehouses in Hadımköy, Esenyurt 1, Esenyurt 2, Tepeören, Tuzla 1, Tuzla 2, Eskişehir, Afyon, Kocaeli Başiskele, Kocaeli Tavşanlı, and Sakarya. We use the water we collect through our rainwater harvesting project for landscaping and firefighting purposes. We reduce our paper consumption through our paperless office project. Additionally, we maintain the efficiency of every system under the Significant Energy Use scope at the highest level. Furthermore, we are building a sustainable work culture by increasing our colleagues' awareness through regular “Energy Efficiency Awareness Training” sessions.
Stating that they have obtained the ISO 50001 Energy Management System Certificate in recent years, Şekli concluded his speech by saying, "All these efforts we have made in our sustainability journey, which continues with the ‘Value to the World’ philosophy in line with the roadmap we have set out in our Corporate Sustainability Manifesto, are steps we have taken not only for today but also for tomorrow. Our goal is to lead the way in shaping a cleaner, more responsible, and greener logistics sector.”
